MISS KITTY:
Miss Kitty is a two-year-old tabby-cat which was born in a field in the Irish country-side. The story of “Miss Kitty and the Furballs” starts when Miss Kitty (or Kendra Kittypus, as she is known amongst her cat-friends) gets adopted by a young couple. With them, she moves to the rural outskirts of Dublin. Before meeting Vicky and Alex Hillcrest (or being “cat-napped” by them as she says herself, Kendra used to live in a garden-shed that belonged to two elderly ladies. At the beginning, she finds the new life difficult because Vicky and Alex keep her in the house to make sure she does not run away. Given that Kendra is used to staying outside, this change in circumstances is not easy for the young cat. But the real adventure begins, when Vicky finds five orphaned kittens in a hedge and decides to keep them. From one day to the other, Kendra becomes their nanny as well as their teacher (much to her annoyance) and the kittens refer to her as “Miss Kitty”.

As the kittens grow older, the become involved in a number of mysterious adventures. Given that they always looked at Miss Kitty as their surrogate-mother, it is hardly surprising, that her role changes gradually from a nanny / teacher to a counselor / adviser as the stories begin to unravel... FURLOCK - The Claw of Justice:
Furlock ("The Claw of Justice") is the oldest of the Furballs. Vicky finds him and his five siblings together with their mum in a hedge when they are about three weeks old and takes them home. Even though Vicky and Alex, together with their vet, do everything in their power to save all of them, Furlock' s mum and one of his siblings do not make it.

After their mum's sad passing, Vicky and Alex put a lot of effort into bringing up the little orphans that have “landed on their doorstep”. The original plan of keeping one of the kittens and finding good homes for the rest, is soon canceled by Vicki’s soft heart. Being the oldest of the pack would naturally make Furlock the leader of the gang. However, he much prefers to stay in the background leaving the role of the leader to his brother Black-Eye.

Gradually, he grows into being the “thinker” of the gang. One of his special talents is his logical thinking. He considers it most important that “things need to be in the right order”. Equally, he is exceptionally orderly and organized. When the first mysteries cross the kitten's way, he takes responsibility for their “archives” (which in fact is a secretly gathered pile of different things behind Vicki’s favorite sofa in the bedroom).
BELLADONYA (Bella) - The omniscient translator
Belladonya (or “Bella” for short) is the “odd one” out of the litter. For several reasons: Out of the five of them, she is the only tortoiseshell. Therefore, her tricolor coat makes her the link between all of them while at the same time being different. Also, given that each one of the others sis “one part of a set of twins” (there are two ginger-and-whites and two black-and-whites), Bella is the only kitten without a “direct match”. At the same time, and that is the interesting thing about Bella, she is the one who suffers the most when the siblings get separated from each other. Bella needs at least one of her siblings around to be comfortable.

Bella's most outstanding talent is the ability to understand human language in its spoken form. This puts her into a perfect position to follow communications between humans and translate them to the others. In addition to that, her cuteness and her “cuddly appearance” give her the opportunity to appeal to everyone very quickly. Given that she loves as many cuddles as she can get anyway, there is not much hardship involved in making the best of it...

Using her all her talents to their best gradually makes Belladonya the Furballs' own spy.

Bella is also a very sociable kind of animal and always in good humor. She just gets on with everyone. That is why she, of all of them, has the biggest network of friends and acquaintances. If the other kittens are stuck with a problem, they will always ask Bella if she knows someone that might help them out.

Out of all the kittens, Bella is closest to her brother Pawson. If Bella is confronted with a problem she can't figure out, she always uses Pawson first to bounce off her ideas. Also, the combination of her talent and Pawson's ability to read the minds of humans and animals makes them a very good match when a case needs to be solved.
ALEXANDER HILLCREST:
or Alex, as he is called by his wife Vicky and his pets, is a 39-year-old police officer in the An Guarda Siochana, the Irish police force. He grew up in a rural village called Knockcroghery (Gaelic for “The Execution Hill”) in the mid-west of Ireland. He is the oldest of 5 siblings. His brothers Kevin and Patrick have both moved to England a couple of years back, his sister Eileen is living not too far away from Alex and Vicky in Dublin and his youngest sister, Michelle, went to Australia only recently. He is a tall, dark-haired guy with glasses. When on duty, he swaps his glasses for contacts to limit the risk of injuries. Most of the time, Alex likes the job as an Irish Guard but, in the aftermath of the global financial crises, times are a bit rough, and lately, there were some incidents where that ended with injuries on both sides. Judging Vicky's reactions when he comes back home after a hard shift, Alex begins to realizes that Vicky is getting more and more worried about him and would like him to take up another, less dangerous job.

His biggest dream is to run his own business as an auctioneer or an art's dealer, but being as security-conscious as he is, he wants to wait until he can take early retirement. Whenever he finds the time, he does courses in arts, antiques etc. to prepare himself for his “second” career.

At home, when he does not have to wear his uniform, his standard-outfit usually consists of a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. Even though he would be more of a “dog-person”, he can understand Vicky's affection to cats. What he does not like though is the fact that, having pets, limits your ability to travel. But where there is a will, there is a way...

Other than traveling and seeing foreign places, Alex has two more pleasures in life: His love for classical music for one, and his daily habit of reading the paper first thing in the morning (together with a fresh, black cup of coffee). Vicky knows Alex well enough not to disturb him in those “sacrosanct 15 minutes”, unless it is a case of emergency. Later on, this habit will lead to quite a few problems. After all, cats do not value a newspaper the same way humans do, do they?

VICTORIA HILLCREST
A 35-year-old journalist with a deep affection to cats. She works as an editor / consultant for several different Irish newspapers and would like to write a book at some stage but does not know how to go about it yet. Vicky and Alex got married a little more than 2 years ago after having known each other for 5 years. Her deep affection to cats is a life-long habit because she's lived with them for nearly all her life. Vicky wants to support Alex in setting up his own company because has begun to be a little bit worried that his job with the police is getting more and more dangerous.

Out of personal interest, she has done a course in interior design only recently because she always liked to decorate her home (driving Alex mad by re-arranging pieces of furniture on a weekly basis) but had never looked at it as a career-perspective. Given the nature of the buiness Alex plans to set up, interior design however could be a valuable addition in the future. Reading and watching DVD's are two of her biggest hobbies. Usually, she tends to find at least one new addition to her “collections” every week. Alex tries to get her to bring the books she read to a charity-shop or sell them on but she is not very good at giving things away (for money or otherwise).

Even though she is not much into fashion herself, one of her regular jobs is a series of articles about the latest fashion-trends. If Vicky does not have to dress-up for professional reasons, she likes to run around in Jeans and a Sweatshirt (which more times than not “fell” out of Alex' wardrobe rather than hers – good thing if you have roughly the same size as your husband...). While raising the kittens, her bond to the kittens gets stronger and stronger. She tends to view them as “kids” rather than “cats” -  a blessing and a curse at the same time...
